Ex Corde Ecclesiae: A Conversation
"From the Heart of the Church"
Saturday, Sept. 18, 1999
A conference at The Catholic University of America on Saturday, Sept. 18, explored the implementation of Ex Corde Ecclesiae at Catholic universities in the United States. The conference, "Ex Corde Ecclesiae: A Conversation 'From the Heart of the Church,'" provided a forum for theologians, canon law experts and leaders of Catholic higher education at Catholic University's Columbus School of Law in Washington, D.C.
While Pope John Paul II’s 1990 apostolic constitution has been praised for its depth of vision, its general norms and a first draft of particular norms generated controversy in the past year. The National Conference of Catholic Bishops is expected to return this fall to the task of preparing particular norms for eventual submission to and approval by the Holy See.
The conference at Catholic University examined aspects of the proposed content of particular norms from the perspectives of theology, canon law, civil law and American Catholic higher education.
The Ex Corde Ecclesiae conference is of particular importance for educational assistance to Catholic college and university presidents or their representatives, bishops or their delegates, major superiors of religious institutes sponsoring Catholic colleges and universities, chairpersons or members of boards of trustees at Catholic colleges and universities and presidents of Catholic learned societies.
Thomas Monaghan, president of the Ave Maria Foundation and Chairman of the Ave Maria School of Law, provided funding for the conference.
